I created "Design Vibes" when I realized how limiting design styles are for my clients. Design Vibes encompass the look, feel and experience that can be created in a space. By highlighting a handful of words, my clients help me understand what they're drawn to. If there is more than one decision maker on a project, I have them both fill out the design vibes sheet. I then have to find a way to blend both of their vibes together, see how I can incorporate each of their vibes into the home. My friend Brooke came up with the term "mash up" to describe this process and I love it. I'm doing a mini series where I solicited 5 couples' help so I could show all of you my process behind mashing up vibes. First up, my friends B + B.

B1 chose: bright, comfortable, intentional, minimalist, and simplistic.
B2 chose: airy, curated decluttered, finished, moody, and nature-inspired.
Most of these individual vibes actually mash up nicely together. Curated and intentional. Decluttered and minimalist. Nature inspired and airy can also pair well with minimalist and simplstic. In doing this exercise with couples, it's also nice to see where the overlap is happening, what they have in common. The biggest challenge in mixing these particular two vibes would be the bright and moody pieces. It's important to me when designing, that both people feel heard and that their vibes are accounted for in their home.

This is what I came up with for the B+B vibes mash up. I knew that they were looking at remodeling their bathroom, so I wanted to created a vibes moodboard for that space to get them in the headspace for that. I want this moodboard to serve as inspiration for them. The wallpaper mural: speaks to that organic, nature-inspired look. B2 wanted moody, so for her I put in that gorgeous, moody dark green tile for the shower. But because I know B1 wants more of a bright space, we have white paint for the walls. Behind the vanity, I'd also suggest a white tile, but if you know me, it has to be interesting! This particular white tile has a design in it. I know that storage is an issue for them, so a floating vanity for that decluttered look, but with drawers and a shelf for tidy containment. This is also fluted, which adds interesting detail.
Now B+B can use this moodboard to make all the decisions needed during a bathroom remodel because they have a clear vision and end goal in mind. In a client project, I'd use this as a starting point, a jumping off point to help me make a design and select all the details that go with it. Getting those vibes right is so important!
