Neuroaesthetics is the study of how our brains respond to our surroundings--especially the spaces we live in. Long before we "decide" how we feel in a room, our nervous system has already reacted to things like light, color, order, texture, and nature. In this mini series, I'm sharing a few simple, science-backed ideas that explain why some spaces feel grounding and others feel draining--and how thoughtful design choices can quietly support a calmer, more comfortable home.
Biophilia: Why Nature Calms the Nervous System
One of the most powerful, and accessible, ways our surrounds affect us is through our connection to nature. Humans are biologically wired to respond to natural elements with a sense of safety and ease, even when we don't consciously register it. This idea, known as biophilia, helps explain why spaces with natural light, organic materials, and subtle references to the outdoors tend to feel calmer and more grounding.
Why am I telling you this? I want my clients' homes to feel restorative. I believe in the philosophy that outer order = inner calm. I believe this outer order, inner calm makes us happier in our homes and enjoy our lives more. Take a look at these spaces I've designed. These are just some examples of the many ways I help clients create homes that feel calm, grounded, and truly supportive of their lives.

What's important to remember: Even small connections to nature can noticeably calm your nervous system. Your home can help your body downshift without you consciously realizing it!
You don't need to completely rethink your home to experience the benefits of biophilia. Small, intentional choices--natural light, organic materials, a view, or even a subtle reference to nature--can support a calmer nervous system. When your surroundings work with your biology instead of against it, your home becomes more than a place to live. It becomes a place to exhale.
