I created "Design Vibes" when I realized how limiting design styles are for my clients. Design Vibes encompass the look, feel and experience that can be created in a space. By highlighting a handful of words, my clients help me understand what they're drawn to. If there is more than one decision maker on a project, I have them both fill out the design vibes sheet. I then have to find a way to blend both of their vibes together, see how I can incorporate each of their vibes into the home. My friend Brooke came up with the term "mash up" to describe this process and I love it. I'm doing a mini series where I solicited 5 couples' help so I could show all of you my process behind mashing up vibes. Fourth in this series, are my friends K+B.

K chose: botanical, clean, comfortable, interesting, mid-century modern.

B chose: cozy, decluttered, inviting, relaxed, warm.

In doing this exercise with couples, it's nice to see where the overlap is happening, what they have in common. These two actually have a lot in common, and both lists pair so well together. Honestly, there isn't anything from their list that wouldn't mash well.

Although I did pick some mid-century modern pieces for this space, it does not need to be overly done here. Mid-century modern incorporates a clean look, with clean lines. So you can still have those vibes without going over the top with that style. I love the bed with the extended nightstands-- such a clean look. The walnut also adds some warmth, per B's vibes. You can also get beds like this that come upholstered vs. the wood you see here. I love the moody blue here (actually named Moody Blue, a Sherwin Williams color), but a light to medium sage green would also be really pretty with everything else we have in the design. The rug doesn't have a lot of color, but it does have a lot of texture which provides both interest and a good feeling under your feet getting out of bed each day.

Kelly sconce west elm

I like the mid-century wall sconces for by the bed you see in the vibes mash-up moodboard. I think they're pretty interesting, but if K+B wanted to add more interest there, I found these sconces that would do the trick!

The chair and ottoman for the bedroom gives the comfy, relaxed, cozy, inviting vibes. A great place to curl up and read, which I know K loves to do! Of course an ivory linen curtain to give a soft, finished look to the space. Also helps the space to feel inviting.

In a client project, I'd use this as a starting point, a jumping off point to help me make a design and select all the details that go with it. This design mash up isn't really meant to be THE design, but rather help see where there's overlap and also how to incorporate what each person cares about. Getting those vibes right is so important!
